Tayloe Piggott Gallery is pleased to present Hot Days and Nights, an exhibition of paintings and watercolors by Kathryn Lynch. Illustrating moments of Lynch’s time spent in Spain, Mexico, and Virginia, this exhibition features warm tones that transport the viewer to a balmy evening far away from snowy Jackson, Wyoming. A reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, December 27th from 5-8pm. All are invited to attend.
Lynch is well known for her quiet confidence and the honest simplicity within her work. Approaching her subjects with patience, diligence, and incredible focus, Lynch constantly challenges herself to create a completely unique body of work. However, each series is united through Kathryn’s consistent and distinct aesthetic. Each time her subjects transcend mere representation to capture the essence of their being. Lynch does not focus on the physical anatomy of what she paints but is driven to capture the emotional presence of her subjects. “[She] paints the experience of passing by something, rather than the thing itself”. The ordinary and mundane become illuminated within Lynch’s work, poignantly capturing the viewer’s gaze.
Her latest body of work features paintings and watercolors on paper, board, and canvas. Emblematic of Lynch’s time spent in vibrant environments, these works show the warmth of Spain and Mexico, as well as Virginia. The Spanish series, full of red sunsets and beach scenes, were painted during Lynch’s Valparaiso Foundation fellowship, an artist’s residency in Mojácar, on the picturesque southern coast of Spain. Other watercolors in the exhibition are from her time in Mexico. The blue series emerged from Lynch’s residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. A sage of place, Lynch parses the new accumulation of imagery into universally resonant moments. Depicting beautiful scenes of sunsets and warm skies, this exhibition brings together hot days and nights across the world, warming our wintry mecca in Wyoming.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Kathryn Lynch received her undergraduate degree from William Smith College in Geneva, NY, and an MFA at the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. She also attended the esteemed Skowhegan School of Painting in 1991. Since earning her MFA, Lynch has had seventeen solo exhibitions, participated in well over forty group shows, and has works featured in both corporate and public collections. Some of these include the University of California Berkeley Art Museum, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and the Millennium Art Collection in the Ritz Carlton, Battery Park, in NYC. Lynch has also been the recipient of a residency at Joya: Arte & Ecologia, at Los Gázquez in 2009, the 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Award, the aforementioned 2018 Foundation Valparaiso residency and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2018.
