Artist Feature: Tom Hammick

Glyndebourne | Meet the Makers

Artist Tom Hammick talks about the opera-inspired works he has created for Glyndebourne Festival 2021.

Tom Hammick is Glyndebourne’s Associate Artist for 2021-2022. Hammick (b.1963) is a British painter and printmaker. Hailed as a ‘visionary artist’, Hammick’s works are informed by a reverence for opera, nature, poetry, cinema and myth, woven together with personal memory, and his mesmeric use of colour, vivid outlines and expressive mark-making.

This major exhibition of opera inspired woodcuts, etchings and paintings marks the first of two festival exhibitions by Hammick and is presented both online and in Gallery 94 at Glyndebourne. All the woodcuts and etchings are made by Hammick in his studio in small editions. Each impression has unique variations in colouring and patination, which results in an image that, while using the same printing plates, remains unique. These are termed ‘editions variable’.
