EVERYTHING IS LIQUID
DOUG AND MIKE STARN -
American artists Doug and Mike Starn are identical twins born in 1961, work in Beacon, NY at their 40,000 square foot studio. First having received international attention at the 1987 Whitney Biennial, the Starns were primarily known for working conceptually with photography, and are largely concerned with interconnection and interdependence. Over the past three decades, they have continued to defy categorization, effectively combining traditionally separate disciplines such as photography, sculpture, and architecture.

As twins and lifelong collaborators, they are innately and profoundly aware that nothing stands alone, everything is interdependent. Everything is Liquid, their most recent body of work, explores how all things are flowing, moving, and finding new form, in ways apparent to the human eye or spanning across and beyond lifetimes. The Starns probe this idea through comparing ceaselessly rising and falling seascapes with mountain-scapes, formed by the gradual yet perpetual turbulence of geologic change. The result is artwork that are neither simply photography or sculpture, but rather three-dimensional objects of inquiry by their very nature.
